Tauba Auerbach is a New York based artist and is represented by Deitch Projects. One of her shows at Deitch Projects “here and now/and nowhere” received critical acclaim and exposure. She has now designed a series of playing cards which builds on her 50/50 work – “…an exploration of opposites and language”. The book 50/50, consists of 100 pages, 100 patterns, 50% white and 50% black.
The series One Deck of Cards has the same concept consisting of two different decks. One based on mathematical functions and the other on geometric shapes. Additionally three new typefaces were created to represent the king, queen and knave.
The Functions Deck utilises the basic mathematics functions as suits (+ – รท x). Instead of using black and red suits the cards either feature a black suit with a white background or white suit with a black background in keeping with the 50/50 series.
The Shapes Deck is a more a classic deck using the original red and black colours for suits. The suits are geometric shapes. The Royals are represented as platonic solids whilst Jokers are scribbles or amoebas.
Auerbach, has really transformed something that is classic and familiar to something that is unique and abstract yet somewhat simplistic. Additionally what make the decks collectable items are the hand numbered encasing, blind-de-bossed, linen slide box with ribbon lift and pull-tab. They are produced in an edition of 250 with 10 artist proofs and was produced in collaboration with Brent Dzekciorius of DZEK. Anybody up for a round of Auerbach Poker?!
